MI5 has issued an espionage alert accusing the China General Technology Research Institute of using British academics to spy on British AI research. The security service says the institute has very strong ties to China's Ministry of State Security, its civilian intelligence agency. The warning urges universities and researchers to be vigilant against attempted recruitment by Chinese state-linked actors.
Why now: The rare public MI5 alert accusing a Chinese state-linked institute of exploiting British academics is a significant UK-China relations and national security story.
