A six-axis hexapod robot has been announced as capable of moving loads of up to 1,100 pounds (about 500 kilograms) while achieving sub-micron positioning precision. Hexapods use parallel actuator structures for extremely fine motion control, and this combination of heavy payload with nanoscale-level accuracy targets demanding industrial and scientific applications such as optics alignment, semiconductor production, and precision metrology.
