GM and LG Energy Solution will spend $1 billion converting their Spring Hill plant in Tennessee into the first factory to mass-produce prismatic lithium manganese-rich cells. The battery chemistry is seen as a cheaper alternative to conventional EV batteries, and the move signals both companies are pushing to cut battery costs as electric vehicle competition intensifies.
