Pierre, a 54-year-old chimpanzee at the ChimpHaven sanctuary in Louisiana, was blind from cataracts until veterinary ophthalmologist Kenneth Pierce replaced his clouded lens. Caretakers spent months training Pierre to hold his face against the mesh of his enclosure and keep his eyes still so the operation could be performed, and the procedure has restored his vision.
