Pierre, a 54-year-old chimpanzee living at the ChimpHaven sanctuary in Louisiana, was blind from cataracts until veterinary ophthalmologist Kenneth Pierce replaced his clouded lenses. Caretakers spent months training Pierre to hold his face against the mesh and keep his eyes still so the procedure could be performed. He can now see again, and the story has been widely shared as a feel-good animal care item.
